2nd International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics (ECM2)
Mission Statement
To facilitate a rich exchange of knowledge between academia, industry, and research societies whom seek solutions to address energy challenges worldwide.
Introduction
Since James Watt, a Scottish inventor, improved the efficiency of steam engine, human civilization relies more and more on a steady supply of energy. China’s rise as an international superpower and the global energy crisis are challenging the world. We are at a transitional age. On one hand, we see technology advances in the exploration and development of oil and gas, a depleting resource; we see growth in handling aging and decommissioning. On the other hand, we see ideas and plans for the future’s new energy structure. This symposium is about energy challenges, the underlying energetic basis (mechanics) for society, involving multiple disciplines in technology, science, management and policy-making. The topics include both fossil fuels and many different forms of renewable energy. In addition, we will discuss issues related to energy efficiency, safety, environment and ecology. The symposium venue is located in Aberdeen, Scotland, the energy capital of Europe. Attendees include engineers, scientists, ecologists, regulators, administrators and policy advisors etc.

Session 05: GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Geothermal Energy utilisation is varied based on the availability of geothermal resources at specific locations. In Europe high temperature fields account for up to 1,850MWe installed capacity in 2013, with an additional 8,000MWth installed for direct uses from low and medium enthalpy resources. More geographically widespread ground source heat pumps, account for 17,000MWth installed capacity for direct uses with 50% of this for heating and cooling.
Renewable energy policies in many countries set targets for the installation and development of different technologies. The different occurrences of geothermal resources provide the potential for addressing key energy challenges country and local levels such as the provision of base load electricity as well innovative heating and cooling solutions. Whilst geothermal energy is included in many national energy policies through development targets, both technical and non-technical barrier to the development of this sector remain.
The geothermal energy session of the 2nd International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics invites researchers, engineers, policy makers and technologist to submit their latest technical work in geothermal research, policy, experimentation, exploration, development and utilization. This session covers broad topics including both deep ground for electrical power generation and shallow geothermal for heating and cooling, agricultural and aquaculture applications. We encourage geothermal researchers and experts from around the world to attend the geothermal energy session.
